Star Trek

Being current is not always all it's cracked up to be. It's hard work being current. You always have to stay on top of things, seek out the newest, latest, and greatest, and then grab hold of it and make it your own before someone else does.

Yes, I'm talking about blogging. And this particular blog, the one you're reading right now, this little chunk of the web claimed by yours truly, is anything but current. As a matter of fact, it's completely retro.

Well, no, that's not entirely true. I'm running the latest version of WordPress on a site hosted by HostPapa, who are running the lastest and greatest versions of Apache, PHP, and MySQL. But as for the rest of it, well, retro all the way, baby.

The images on my pages are all retro technology. I'm running Windows XP Home edition on my very old HP Pavilion 522c. And I'm not exactly fresh and young myself (though I can be quite immature sometimes). And I really like talking and writing about stuff that happened, well, a loooong time ago. As I sit here in the den, typing away in WriteMonkey (which is now my text-entry program of choice), watching the wind and rain of Hurricane Bill begin to build to what I assume will be mighty crescendo later today, I thought I'd take a moment to reflect on this blog, life, the universe, and whatever else happens to wander into my overactive noggin.

After all, what else can one do besides reflect and ruminate when the weather outside is frightful and it's not cold enough for a fire, however delightful (or one doesn't have a fireplace)? No, don't answer that question, because it will derail my train of thought.

So, this is me, pretending to be a mirror, reflecting…

I can't believe I've done three weeks of this blog without missing a day. I did have a little help, from Ganga and Asheyna, who wrote guest posts at just the right time (the heat was getting to me, and I was not in much of a writing mood on either of those days), but still, there's a blog entry every single day since August 2nd.

I'm kind of impressed with myself. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s the second guest post I mentioned on Sunday, this one by another of my Protagonize friends, Asheyna. I want to extend my thanks to her, both for posting here and for letting me post on her blog. Sounds like the barter system, don’t it?

I was so excited when Faltarego asked for guest posts on his Twitter and for some crazy reason decided to allow me to write something. Then life happened and I wasn’t really able to write, as so often happens. I could have written… but I highly doubt rants on the world’s lack of common sense would have made it past the review. Thankfully Faltarego is a super nice person and hasn’t harassed me at all for my lack of writing ability.

Met Faltarego over on Protagonize, which is a truly awesome website, and if he doesn’t post about it I’m going to sneak back over here and do it myself! He’s the one that really introduced me to the idea of writing fan fiction. I’d read some Harry Potter fanfic which was pretty good but had never thought about it beyond that. Then he harassed me into joining the Fan Fiction group he moderated.

The more I thought about fanfic the more I realized why I liked it. It’s Open Source writing! For those who don’t know what Open Source is, Faltarego wrote an excellent guest post on my blog (shameless plug) that goes into what exactly it is and where it came from. Read the rest of this entry »

I wanted to start this blog off with a bang, and I can't think of a better topic to kick things of than Star Trek. It's movies, pop culture, mass-media, and television all rolled into one. It's a phenomenon that's been important to me for a lot of years, it's a cultural phenomenon umatched in its breadth, scope, and longevity, and its latest incarnation just happens to be one of the best films I've seen in a very long time.

The timing for this is perfect. I'm starting this new blog, it's my birthday, and it's been three months since the new Star Trek film was released. So, I think the stars are in alignment. Star Trek it shall be.

A warning here, though. I think the film's been out long enough for me to mention plot details, but if you haven't seen it, and you don't want to know anything, then for pity's sake, don't read the rest of this post. You'll just spoil it for yourself.

That's why they calls 'em spoilers. Read the rest of this entry »
