Whip It Good!

I went to see Whip It this past weekend, and I have to say it was a most enjoyable night out at the movies. I am an unabashed Ellen Page fan (I've rattled on at length about her elsewhere in this blog), and I'm also a big fan of Drew Barrymore, so this was a combination I had to see for myself. I was also eager to see the results of Drew's first stint in the director's chair.

I'll say right off the top that the movie was big fun. The casting was near perfect, and the sheer jubilant energy of the film was infectious. This was a great ride, and I buckled up and let it sweep me away.

There was a bit of "formula" lurking around the edges of the film, but not so much that it detracted from my enjoyment of it. The main premise is a bit typical: Our protagonist (Ellen Page as Bliss Cavendar) discovers a heretofore unknown passion (roller derby), which of course is frowned upon by her nearest and dearest (her parents). It's also an "underdog" story, in that Bliss is a newcomer to the sport and the team she joins is the worst in the league. I will give Barrymore and team kudos, however, in that they did depart from cliché at a couple of crucial spots and made what could have been true formula into more of a concoction. I recently watched Juno again. I saw it in the theatre when it was first released, and it immediately turned me into a giant, slobbering Ellen Page fan.

Okay, that didn't sound so good. I'm tall, but I'm not giant, and I occasionally drool when food is particularly tasty, but I don't slobber. However, I am a big fan of the Ellen.

The fact that she's from my hometown has nothing to do with it. Okay, there's little twinge of civic pride in there somewhere, but it's quite overmatched by the gobs of appreciation I have for her talent as an actress. "Frighteningly talented" was the phrase I believe one reviewer used.

Juno was the film that launched our Ms. Page into the spotlight, but she'd been working like a fiend in the industry for years prior to that. She's been acting in film and television since she was ten years old. Being a Canadian, she's done most of her work so far in Canadian productions, which means she was "under the radar" for much of her career. Read the rest of this entry »

This is going to be a short one, because I'm not feeling terribly good today, and it's now evening, and I'm extremely tired, so I'm going to go to bed early. However, I don't think I'd be very happy with myself if I missed a day of blogging at this stage of the game. So, here goes…

On my personal blog, I've written a couple of posts about movies that I absolutely hated (Angels and Demons, which annoyed me at every turn, and Sands of Oblivion, which was such a complete and utter waste of every possible resource that it pains me to even mention it again), but now that I'm reviewing films more regularly on this new blog, I'd like to bring some real positivity to the table.

A few weeks back, I watched what was quite possibly one of the best films I've ever seen. It's a quiet little film called The Visitor, and it blew me away with its message and its humanity. It's thought-provoking, heartbreaking, and almost unbelievably well put together. I give it my highest recommendation. Read the rest of this entry »
