About This Site

What is this place?

It’s a labor of love, that’s what it is.

I say that for two reasons: Firstly, because I’m going to be writing about subjects that hold great interest for me (i.e. stuff I love), and secondly, because I love web design, graphics, and writing in general.

So… It’s important to me that the site looks good, reads well, and is interesting.

I leave it to you to tell me if any of those is actually the case.

The topics I’m going to be writing about here cover a fairly wide range of my interests: Movies, music, writing, books, mindfulness, computers, the internet, and superheroes. (Yes, superheroes.)

That’s a lot of territory. But then, I’ve never really had much of problem expounding on things that interest me. Also, the world is a big place. And everything in it interlocks together. So, these days, I can’t talk about superheroes without talking about movies, and I can’t talk about movies without talking about music or writing, and I can’t talk about writing without talking about process, which involves mindfulness, and so on, and so on…

Everything is connected.

So, what’s with all the retro technology graphics?

For some reason or other, I have an affinity for old pictures.

I love seeing what people, places, and things looked like in the past. It’s fascinating to me to see a picture taken dozens of years ago in the city where I live. It sparks my imagination and makes we want to travel back in time to see what it was really like then.

Using pictures of old technology (or retro-techno, as I like to call it) combines my interest in the past with my love of gadgets. It’s kind of a backward-looking, forward-thinking snapshot of the present. If that even makes any sense at all. It’s a way of  looking at human innovation that embraces forward movement without losing sight of where we’ve been. (Again with the interconnectedness.)

Plus, I think it looks cool.

And what’s with that little wooden guy…?

Yeah, yeah. I know. The little wooden figure underneath the globe on the left-hand side of the page. (If your screen resolution is less than 1024×768, you might not see it.)

This guy:

Weeping Yogi (bw)

Weeping Yogi (bw)

These wooden carvings are called weeping yogis, and I was introduced to them many years ago when I was given one as a gift. The idea behind them is that we can place our sorrows and burdens on their backs, and they will take them on for us so that we can be more joyful. It kinda makes me feel bad for the little guys, but it’s a wonderful concept, and it ties into the area of mindfulness that I’ll be writing about in some of these pages.

I’m no yogi, but I know that meditation can be beneficial, and I know that trying to live in the present moment, while challenging, can remove all kinds of stress and anxiety. I’ve done it. For small amounts of time.

So the weeping yogi is just a graphical representation of mindfulness, meditation, and moment-to-moment living, all things I strive to do better.

And writing is, in an of itself, a form of mediation for me. So I shall strive to write every day.

And you’ll be able to see for yourself if I do.

So, that’s enough about the site. Go forth and experience it.
